Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a medication used to treat or prevent excessive blood loss from major trauma, postpartum bleeding, surgery, tooth removal, nosebleeds, and heavy menstruation. It is also used for hereditary angioedema. It is taken either by mouth or injection into a vein.
Function of Tranexamic Acid Powder
Tranexamic acid exerts its antifibrinolytic effect through the reversible blockade of lysine-binding sites on plasminogen molecules. It inhibits endometrial plasminogen activator and thus prevents fibrinolysis and the breakdown of blood clots.
It is used as firstline non-hormonal treatment of dysfunctional uterine bleeding, and heavy bleeding associated with uterine fibroids. The histological appearance of the necrosis in women treated by it is no different from the spontaneous incidence of thrombosis.
Tranexamic acid is used in orthopedic surgery to reduce blood loss. It is of proven value in clearing the field of surgery and reducing pre- and postoperative blood loss. Drain and number of transfusions are reduced. It is commonly used in joint replacement surgery.
Tranexamic acid should be considered for use in bleeding trauma patients.
It also can be used in dentistry in the form of a 5% mouth rinse after extractions or surgery in patients with prolonged bleeding time, e.g. from acquired or inherited disorders.
